Microsoft unveils a road map for SQL Server "Kilimanjaro," which will contain new BI capabilities. Microsoft officials also discuss plans for the DATAllegro integration with SQL Server, which they say will enable SQL Server to penetrate deeper into data warehouse environments by improving scalability.

Microsoft will participate in a new alliance of academic institutions and researchers called the Games for Learning Institute, aiming to promote the study and use of games as a way to educate students in math and science. Craig Mundie, Microsoft's chief research and strategy officer, announced the G4LI project during a speech at New York University.

While much of the VMworld conference focused on VMware's plans to create an operating system capable of managing the entire data center, Intel and AMD are quietly preparing to increase virtualization at both the processor and chip-set level. In the coming months, Intel plans to detail the virtualization capabilities of its Nehalem processors, while AMD is launching a new server platform that will feature the ability to create I/O virtualization.

Google co-founder Sergey Brin says the new Chrome Web browser is not the Web operating system many people see it as, but acknowledges it will get more robust through the open-source community under the Chromium project. Microsoft and other search engines and Web services providers must be wary about this evolution in application development. Google may be treading lightly with Chrome now, but the browser, combined with Google's search and Apps, could end up being a big threat to Microsoft Windows' market share.

Microsoft will buy $100 million worth of Linux support certificates from Novell to redistribute to Microsoft Windows Server customers for Novell for SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES). Novell has promised "tools, support, training and resources" for SUSE Linux Enterprise Server users seeking "optimal interoperability" with Microsoft Windows Server.

Microsoft has branched into enterprise applications, Web services and several other areas to compete with Google, Apple and other rivals.

While most of the 2008 Intel Developer Forum focuses on Intel processors that will use the upcoming Nehalem microarchitecture, part of the forum also is looking ahead to what Intel will offer for both laptops and notebook security. Intel also introduced its first quad-core processors for laptops called the Core 2 Extreme QX9300 and the Core 2 Quad Q9100. In addition, Intel is expected to offer an anti-theft device for notebooks.

Embarcadero Technologies, which acquired CodeGear from Borland, plans to deliver new releases of Delphi and C++Builder. Delphi 2009 and C++Builder 2009 for Windows development will ship Aug. 25. Embarcadero calls the new releases the "biggest releases of Delphi and C++ in many years" and expects the new CodeGear releases will make application creation more efficient and productive for packaged software developers and enterprise developers building client/server applications.

In order to develop its ATI graphics, AMD is backing both the OpenCL programming language and Microsoft's DirectX 11 APIs. The move means that AMD is looking for a way to differentiate its graphics from the Intel Larrabee initiative and Nvidia's CUDA programming language for its general-purpose GPUs.
