Opinion: With the advent of Microsoft's Mix06 conference in Vegas this week, do all signs point to excessive kool-aid drinking in Redmond?

Vegas baby, Vegas.

Ten years ago Microsoft took a gamble by embracing the Internet. Now they're back at the tables again, figuratively and literally, gambling on Web 2.0 and hosting a conference on same in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Personally, I think MS will only traipse so far into the Web 2.0 wonderland. They're doing a good job pandering to the Web 2.0 crowd with their "Live" strategy, and hooking their software into online services. But a full 40% of their business revenue comes from software sales to the SMB market. Their biggest challenge right now, it seems to me, is how to manage their profitable shrink-wrapped business amid the Web 2.0 hype.
