The software vendor schedules the show for October, despite speculation in the industry that it would be postponed.

Contrary to speculation, Microsoft will hold its Professional Developers Conference next year.

When the software giant postponed its annual Windows Hardware Engineering Conference to some point in the fall of 2008, some observers speculated that the PDC also might be postponed or canceled. However, Microsoft Dec. 6 announced it will hold the PDC 2008 Oct. 27-30 in Los Angeles.

The PDC is Microsoft's premier event for developers to see the latest technology from the company, as well as many things in the pipeline. The last PDC was in October 2005. Microsoft typically holds a PDC every two years. The company had planned a PDC 2007, but rescheduled it in May, citing as one reason the fact that so many new technologies are just beginning to get into developers' hands.

Technologies likely to be discussed in detail include Microsoft's Oslo modeling strategy; the next version of Visual Studio (known as Visual Studio 10); Microsoft's Live developer strategy and tooling for building applications for the cloud; Silverlight and the Microsoft designer tools; and broader platform technology, such as Windows 7 and the successor to Windows Server 2008.
